Guys: Hope all is well. I am still looking for a part-time motor for my restricted lake. Very budget constratined but I also want to buy something I can learn on to work on motors. Have in my sights a Chrysler 9.9 serial is 1227 and model is 92h2j. Not sure what year? It currently has no spark but seems (visually) do be in good running condition. Guy told me had low hours. It's 100 bucks. Would like to work on it - to get it running any thoughts. Have researched on this great board and noticed Chryslers are notorious for their ignition problems on the magna ingition pack 2 - and there is an upgrade kit from chrysler. i know that is the wrong name. not sure if my motor has this. Any thoughts before purchasinG? How hard will it be to replace ignition if that is the case. Thank so much for your help. I learn so much on here.

Re: Chrysler 9.9 ??

It's hard to argue with a 9.9 for $100.The rope start pinion gear breaks pretty regularly.I believe it requires a special tool to repair. It appears coils are difficult to find, carb kits are only readily available for about 1/2 the 9.9 motors.
There is a magnatune kit that may solve the need for ignition parts.
Most likely parts won't be available in your area.
For instance E/J parts are available at 1/2 a dozen or more places on the net and probably as many places in your area.
Do a compression check and check the gear lube.
And see if you want to gamble.

Re: Chrysler 9.9 ??

If it is magneto ignition there is no problem. points are available. According to my manual, Magna Power 2 was only installed in some 55, 60, 105, 120, and 135 engines. Yes this ignition was junk and no parts are available for it. As far as I know, the altrnator cd system was ok as was the pre 1980 magnapower alternator ignition. You can probably scrounge up parts over at The Chrysler Crew. Join the chat room tonight Thurs. at 9 pm Eastern and ask Franz--He'll know for sure
