I have a sick mercury 70hp 1981 2 stoke, and a dealer is offering me a chrysler 90hp (from 1983) but it is brand new and has never been run. The chrysler is £2000 ($2800) and he will give me £500 ($700) trade in for my mercury so only £1500 ($2100) to change and it includes control box , fitting , warrenty etc.

I live in the UK and do not know much about chrysler outboards, are they any good ?

chysler became force and was an entry level motor
in terms of cost, technology and features.
they are at the bottom of my list as far as
value and seem to have a lot of problems.
that said, with good detail to maintainece, it
could outlive us both.
price seems a bit high for a motor of that age.
take a look at the motors they sell here as a
comparison.
good luck,
M.Y.

Chrysler was sold to US Marine, then sold to Mercury, then discontinued. I would not buy an old Chrysler. They are technology from 1970. Parts are hard to come by and they are very prone to failure. You should be able to get something much newer for that amount of money.

Some chrysler models are good and some are bad but whenever they run they will run well. They are simplicity design and easy to fit by yourself with the manual.
Low side is they are have low resale value.
This outboard is high (reasonable is $1,200.00)

The price is quite high, but the engine has never been out of the box it was shipped in 20 years ago, would an engine sitting around in storage go bad? The dealer has 40 of them in stock, i think he must have bought a lot from a closing down warehouse.

Ross...IMHO only...a very good motor and price setup is not bad, but 20 years in a crate may be hard on the neoprene and rubber parts...if the dealer would warantee the motor for a good period of time I would have no problems with this deal...where else you gonna get a new 90 hp motor for that price...just a Thought

Even though new, I would be a bit concerned about rust on the bearings, journals, cylinder walls and other internal parts from normal moisture in the air over 20 years. It ain't what you can see that usually kills em.

ross,

That one would scare me. I know you're tempted, because it's NEW! But, consider that the manufacturer is no longer around, and they didn't sell that well when they were.

Thanks for all the input, I went for a mariner in the end, its a couple of years older but i think it will be a better engine on the long run.
