chrysler help needed

Okay, I've posted on here a couple of times, and received some good information. Hopefully someone can help me with this because I'm getting a little confused now. '73, 85hp, Chrysler, magnapower ignition (1 coil, 1 set of points). I'm getting good spark all the way to the plugs, each wire will jump a 1/2" gap. The problem is the bottom cylinder isn't making power. When i shut it down and pull the plugs the bottom plug is very clean but is also very wet with fuel, no water bubbles at all. I've moved the plug wires around at the distributor cap and spark plugs and the problem stays on the bottom cylinder. I've checked the compression: 120,115,120. Could I be getting water in the bottom cylinder and not see bubbles on the plug or piston dome? If I had a leaking head gasket wouldn't my compression be down? If I'm somehow losing spark on that cylinder, could the fuel mixture cause the plug to look like new since it isn't getting burned? My thoughts now are new rotor and distributor cap, new exhaust plate gaskets, and new head gasket, but I don't want to throw money where it's not needed. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah frroog the bottom one is very wet with fuel and very clean. Spark plug porcelain is as white or whiter than new. I have set all the floats the same and put new needles and seats in the carbs.

Re: chrysler help needed

Lonewolf, I have a distributor on order. I guess I'm gonna go ahead and replace the distributor, plug wires, and exhaust plate gaskets. I still seem to think it's getting water from somewhere since the plug is so clean!! Any other ideas on clean plug????

well you say water, any trace of water on the plug,or fresh gas.a idea remove the plug's from all cylinder, hook up a set of ear with the water on and spin the engine to see if water is commimg out of cylinder.

I'm only seeing fresh gas. No water. That's what's confusing me. I thought that a bright white spark plug porcelain meant water (steam cleaning). I'll try your suggestion with the ears I hadn't thought of that.

Re: chrysler help needed

Are you testing for spark at the bottom plug with a test plug, or with the plug with which you are trying to run the engine? Try switching plugs and see if the bottom cylinder is still the problem. If you use a plug with some carbon, you will also see if it comes out clean after test use in the lower cylinder. If the lower cylinder fires normally when you switch plugs, of course, you have been using a bad plug in the lower cylinder -- presumably won't fire in one of the other cylinders either.

Re: chrysler help needed

I tested the spark with a screwdriver inserted into the boot to see if it would jump a 1/2" gap to ground and all 3 did. I can put a carboned spark plug in the bottom cylinder and it comes out clean after about 5 min.

Re: chrysler help needed

If you tested the bottom cylinder with another plug and it didn't fire -- and came out clean -- then it does sound like water in the cylinder. Thanks for clarifying.

I still don't know why I'm not seeing any water bubbles on the piston dome or the spark plug  I am planning on pulling the exhaust cover to check there because I have good compression so I don't think it is the head gasket.

I have been going through the same thing with force 125 finely found water leek to the outside of the block at the exhaust pulled the plate and had a bad gasket to the inside to and it was steaming the botom cylinder and no power got new gaskets on order.

Re: chrysler help needed

I have a '75, 70hp, Johnson that had a leaking exhaust gasket. The bottom spark plug was very clean on it but I could see water droplets on the piston dome and the spark plug after running it for a few minutes. I put new exhaust plate gaskets on it and it's good to go now, but this Chrysler isn't showing any water droplets so hopefully exhaust gaskets will still fix it.
