I have a 1970(?) chrysler 70Hp
model#707HF
ser#20649
70BHP
When I try to start the motor the starter bogs down and locks up then starts to smoke :D
When I have the sparkplugs out the engine turns over fine and the starter works ok.
After reading thru a few post I understand I may have to have the starter rebuilt?? I have a new battery fully charged.

my second question involes spark.with the plugs out and the engine turning should I have spark at the plugs.I tested the spark w/ plugs out and I do not have spark.I am new to outboards but not mechcanical(s/p?) stuff.
Is there a setting on the motor that acts as a safty switch?
I have a magpower 12V GND
model#6CB2003
SER#40849

VOLT REG.
MODEL#6PR2005
SER#046312
After reading a few post I started to get confused
about colors and models.I understand that the colors refer to force engines.
Is there a updated ignition system and is that what I need?also what is a CD?
thanks
Doug

Doug,
There is no safety circuit in your motor for the ignition system, if it cranks there should be spark to all cylinders. Let start with the basics: take a compression test with spark plugs in crank the motor over check current draw on the starter it should be around 170amps, if its more than that you will need to replace the starter. good luck, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret

You can just replace parts as necessary.

The engine must spin over for spark to result.

TMD

When you have the plugs out you need to ground the plugs or you will not get a spark. Need to ground the sparkplug threads to some metal part of of motor but away from cylinder opening. If the plug shoot a spark near the cllinder opening and comes in contact with gas it could be dangerous.

scotiany . YOu need to buy a high current probe for your digital volt meter to read high current. Typical dvms will read 2 amp max. The high current probes go around the positive or negative lead and hook up to your dvm. They are around a hundred bucks for a decent one

Re: chrysler ignition and starting

I have the same motor and have received some great help on this site. I am glad to say that mine is now running perfectly however I bought a FACTORY manual and it has been great help also. It even tells how to test each component of the ignition system. These guys can give you better advice than me but feel free to e-mail me if I can help you with anything from the book.

cliffro@bellsouth.net
