Hello, i have a 1981 Chrysler 4hp in very good condition. The engine has good compression, nice spark, clean carb and fuel tank.Ignition point gap is set.020". It will fire but will run terrible and run only for a short bit,15 to 30 seconds than dies out.Spark plug does look wet so i think its getting fuel. I am wondering how to set the ignition / carb timing??? Is there timing marks somewhere?? I had the flywheel off the other day,the points look nice and everything under the flywheel looks very cean. Any ideas??? I do have a manual at home,I just thought i could get some advise, maybe i am just missing something.... Thanks john

Re: Chrysler Ignition Carb timing

Not being familiar with your particular engine, I can't give any specifics. However, there are a few things that apply to all motors. Check that your float level is correct, and the needle valve and seat are in good condition. There are some needles with elastomeric tips that can deform and prevent good seating, allowing fuel to over-fill the bowl. Does your choke operate correctly? As for carb synchronizing, there is most likely a pick-up point (a scribed line) on the throttle cam. I don't think the smaller motors have timing marks on the flywheel. You mention you have a manual - that is where you will find the specs you need.

There are lots of threads on this site that relate to your issue, and most replies mention doing a compression test, replace old fuel lines, fuel pump diaphragm, idle mixture, link & sync, fresh fuel, etc. And don't forget about you water pump impeller!

Just a few thoughts, but you will have to consult your manual.

6.jpgRemote tank?Built in tank??Bad hoses:ethanol??
In the carb, there is a jet #27 that if clogged it will do exactly that.
What is the airscrew setting?
Depending on the carb??Start at 1 turn out from GENTLY seated.
