Looking at a cheap boat with a 55 HP Chrysler but I know nothing about Chrysler. It runs good and the price is really reasonable. Is Chrysler any good?
How does it compare to Johnson or Mercury?

Lets just say, Id rather use a chrysler outboard motor as a boat ankor.

Over rated horse power, lack of parts, lack of reliablity, and Old technology is really what sinks there usablitiy in my eyes

If the operative condition is cheap, then the engine will serve.

Parts are available if you know where to look and the engine is dirt simple and easy to work on.

While the engine is rated at the powerhead, it isn't a dog either.

So, if you want a cheap and easy to maintain engine that will be reliable if you treat it well, then yes, go ahead and buy it---however, don't buy a pig in a poke. Be certain the engine runs unless it is so cheap that repairing it is economically feasable.

Take it for a test if that is an option. They can be reliable motors if you take care of it. I've had one for 3 years now, its a 1973 70hp that came on my Starcraft. While its old technology, it isn't a lazy motor. It is super quiet, was easy to work on and parts are available at maxrules.com. I have purchased my water pumps and gaskets from him, he is terrific.

Chokes are sensitive on them, mine was hard starting. A quick adjustment of the chokes and it fires on the first try.

If the motor has poor compression, run away.
