Going to look at a 1979 skier 700 tomorrow for a parts motor. Will most of the parts off the skier work on a 1977 Chrysler 90hp. It does have a distributer. I need the flywheel to swap over for sure. I also have tar leaking out of my voltage regulator it would be nice if that will swap too. Thanks.

Ohhh, that's a tough one. Specifically I believe that the 1979 has the one piece lower unit while the 77 has a two piece and they will NOT swap. However, I am not sure if the 79 has Prestolite ignition or Motorola. If it is Motorola--that is has a distributor- then everything on the engine will swap. If it is Prestolite non-distributor, then none of the ignition components will swap UNLESS you use all of them and modify the block slightly to accept the stator mount.

You can try the Prestolite rectifier but understand that it is NOT regulated like the Motorola regulator/rectifier.

If it does have the one piece lower unit I strongly suggest that you swap your good 90 HP block onto the leg. You will have a much better choice of propellers.and the one piece lower is much more efficient. It also has a larger water pump. Understand though that if the lower unit is the 1.76 ratio, there will be some loss in performance.

If both engines are two piece lower units (18 spline prop with thrust pin) then everything will swap BUT-- I don't know if the 700 has a 2 to 1 lower unit ratio. Your 90 DOES have a 2 to 1 lower.

Thanks Frank this is about the 5th question you have answered for me. I am positive the 79 has a distributer so that is good. I have a jet pump on my 90hp so I'm not sure about switching the lower unit. I'm sure you already told me but just to make sure...If both these engines have distributers then I can use the flywheel off the 79 on my 77.

Now I remember! The jet pump. The only Chrysler I have ever heard about with one, although I am sure there are more. Since you have the jet, there is no advantage to the extra work involved in swapping the power heads. The added efficiency between the two piece and one piece is in the lower unit itself. Since you don't have a lower unit----

And now I remember a previous post: Your flywheel broke the drive pulley for the distributor belt.

If both have distributors then all parts of the engine minus the lower unit are swappable. While you are at it changing the flywheel, inspect the distributor belt and replace with the best one. They rarely break but it has been known to happen. Do NOT over tighten the belt. It will cause shifting and throttle problems. Correct tightness is when an .010 feeler gauge pressed against the center of the belt deflects it about 3/16 inch before bending.
