Re: Chrysler Skier?

Do you have a model number? Should be located on the lower cowling under the carb or carbs. Probably not much difference other then appearance. Post the model number if you have it.

The motor is a 1979 chrysler. Here is a link for parts. Looks like a normal chrysler. Dont know why they call it a skier other then maybe it was put on speed boats versus fishing boats. Looks like chrysler abandoned 70 HP motors from 1973 to 1978 and then started again in 79.

Chrysler 1979 Skier

If anyone is still paying attention to this post, the skier had a heavier duty lower unit.

Ok, Tower. I'm still listening. I'm always looking to broaden my knowledge on Chryslers. Expand on the heavy duty statement.

Was it actual heavier duty innards like a thicker, stronger, internal prop shaft or was it the 2 to 1 gear ratio gear pak as opposed to the 1.78 to 1 that most 70, 75, and 85s came with?

Since most prop shafts break at the dog clutch splines, I have seen shafts with more meat in this area, but only on newer models--nothing that early.

I know this is old but just so you know have a look at the lower unit of a skier and a normal chrysler they are much wider and the water port is on the round of the prop housing not the fin above. so tower is right, they are a heavy duty lower unit probably as you say for towing skiers as cavitation on tight turns does happen.

Re: Chrysler Skier?

If you are comparing the skier to an earlier Chrysler, there is no comparison. The early Chrysler had a 2 piece lower unit. In 1979, Chrysler redesigned the lower unit and ALL larger Chrysler engines used the same lower unit. The only difference was the gear ratio: Chrysler used 2 to 1 or 1.76 to1 depending upon engine.

They are not "heavy duty" and in fact are one inch shorter than the older two piece lower unit they replaced. If you open them up, you will see the same size gears and same size teeth. The difference is that the teeth are cut in the opposite direction. They use a different prop and are about 3 MPH faster than the old two piece. The drive shaft, however IS a bit more massive than the old 2 piece, but again, it is used in all the lower units so is not specifically heavy duty for the skier.

As written above: The only real difference is the decal.

NOW: Let's put this old thread to bed.
