chrysler timing question...

Hi, I believe i screwed up the timing on my 45hp chrysler. I thought I was turning the idle speed screw but it seems it was the timing screw. I've never actually gotten to run this boat yet because of other problems I've had to work out. Well this weekend I put it in the river and it wouldn't go past 6-7 mph. After giving it 1/3 throttle the rest of the throttle didn't have any impact at all, engine stayed at same rpm's it seemed. It also started running hot so I shut her down. It was pumping water so I don't think that was the problem. I'm thinking that the timing could cause both of these problems correct? (no power and overheating). The manual says you need a special tool to screw into the spark plug hole to set the timing which I don't have. Can i set it with a regular timing light? It has marks on the flywheel so I'm guessing i can. I'm going to post a picture of the screw i turned tomorrow to see if anyone knows if this is the screw for the timing. Btw, the Clymers for this motor is pretty much worthless. I have it but it is really vague on things. I guess because they try to cove every outboard chrysler ever made in one book. Thank god I have another boat with a johnson on it. Caught about a dozen catfish, 2 rockfish, a bluefish and 1/2 bushel of 7-8" crabs today. I'm still determined to get this chrysler running good though. It has 120 comp. in both cylinders, starts first try everytime cold or hot but runs like s#%$.Thanks,

Rich

Re: chrysler timing question...

irich; You didn't say what year your Chrysler 45 HP was. Clymer doesn't cover every year in one manual. My Clymers manual, #B750, covers 1966 to 1984 [3 1/2 to 140 HP], It has a good section on timing for all these models, Chapter 5, Page 131. I think you'll find your model on page 143.

I have two Chryslers and this Spring timed them both in 1 1/2 hours. Happy Boating, Hal

Re: chrysler timing question...

Irich, I looked up your 45HP in the Seloc manual and it says (all years) to set timing at 28° BTDC on models equipped with Flywheel Magneto Ingition and set at 32° BTDC on models equipped with Battery Type and Magnapower I type ignition.

Flywheel Magneto Type Ignition = Has two ignition coils mounted on the stator plate, and has two condensers mounted horizontally.

Battery and Magnapower I Type Ignition = Has ignition coils mounted externally on the powerhead.

Do you have the markings to set the timing on your flywheel? If so, you can do the timing with a timing light at WOT.

If you give me the exact year of your motor, I can give you the other settings and measurements you'll need.

Hope this helps,

Dymo

Re: chrysler timing question...

Thanks for the replies guys, It is between 1971-78 according to the model #.
Thanks for clearing up my ignition type Dymo. I have the magnapower I type ignition. It does have timing marks on the flywheel also. My main concern is how to actually adjust the timing. There is a rod that comes from under the flywheel with a locknut on each end and connetcts to the tower shaft . Where it connects to the tower shaft is a screw with a locknut that i thought was the idle screw. By turning this screw it does move the rod in and out but also the cam that operates the carb. The cam is not touching the black offset bushing on the carb until this screw is turned out a good bit. I guess my question is, Do i adjust the timing with the screw on the towershaft or by turning the rod going under the flywheel? By looking at the book it seems like the towershaft screw. If that's the case how do i adjust the idle speed? there is nothing anywhere right now that is touching the carb to give it more gas. Yet it is idling at around 1800 rpms. starts and runs great on the mufffs though. Does this sound like a timing problem? Thanks,

Rich

Irich, I figured that a picture is worth 1,000 words. If you've played with the adjustment on the timing, I suggest that you get that regulated first. To give you a starting point, the timing adjustment screw between the 2 black plastic blocks on the timing adjustment should be in the range of 3/8" to 1/2" apart. Now tighten up the locknut and try it from this point.

Hope this helps,

Dymo

Re: chrysler timing question...

Dymo, thanks for the picture, but my setup is different than that. for one thing the ignition coils are on the other side of the engine. Also it doesn't have all those electronic parts there or on the otherside...I will have to take a picture of my motor and post it for you to take a look at. Right now it is down to my camp so i won't be able to get it until this weekend. Thanks for the effort though, I really appreciate it.

Rich

Re: chrysler timing question...

If you can get a picture that would be great. With that I'll look up your adjustments in the Seloc repair manual.

Re: chrysler timing question...

step 1. remove #1 plug. put your finger over the hole and turn the flywheel by hand till you feel the air pushing out.then stop
step 2. insert the eraser end of a pencil in hole then continue turning the fly wheel slowly till pencil starts going back into the hole. bach the flywheel up till pencil is at the highest point.
step3.now check timing mark on flywheel and indicator should be at tdc or 0 deg. look at the timing mark on the distributor pulley . it should be aligned with fly wheel.
if not refer to your manual and reset distrbutor pulley and belt

step 4. now adjust throttle pick up using a 12 volt test light instead of timing light or special tool#t29384.

e mail me if your manual doesnt tell you this step.ill send you my number and you can call me then

Re: chrysler timing question...

Hi, I haven't had time to work on this engine in a while but finally got a picture to post.

vwp

I assume (A) is the timing rod correct? I haven't turned this at all.
(B) would this be the idle adjusting screw?
I have the clymer and it is not clear on this at all. Is there a better manual for this motor?
thanks,

Rich
