Hi everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing a 105 HP Chrysler. I know it has a magnapower II ignition system. The model # is: 1209HE
The serial # is: 4806 What year is this motor?

Does anyone know anything about these magnapower II ignitions? I noticed right off that it only has 1 coil. Quite a bit different than my 55 HP. The engine looks really clean and all the wiring looks to be in excellent shape. I'm going to get a compression check on it before I commit to it but I am impressed at this point.

Thanks,

Shane Williams

Re: Chrysler Year Please?

Thanks Rick,

I was looking at my manual tonight and it says that the magnapower II ignition was used only in 1975-76, so that narrows it down even further.

Here's another questions for everyone. My manual states that most of the components of the ignition system are under the flywheel (including the coils). If this is so, what is the 1 coil that I see externally? Is this something other than an ignition coil?

Thanks,

Shane

Re: Chrysler Year Please?

Let me correct my problem. It says that the coils are NOT under the flywheel but in the schematic it shows that there should be 4 coils. I'm a little confused. Are there some variations of this (4 coils on some and 1 coil on others) or am I missing something

Also I just noticed that the model number I gave indicates that this IS NOT a 105 HP but rather a 120 HP, right? I noticed in my manual that there isn't much difference between the 105 and the 120. Does anyone have any experience with these higher horse power Chrysler's?

Thanks,

Shane

Re: Chrysler Year Please?

Hi Turtle
The model#1209HE and ser#4806 is indeed for a 1976 Chrysler 120hp with Mag II Ignition. MagII ignit. is a magnito powerd CD system. This system requires the use of four ignit coils in this case. How ever there seems to be some descrepency. You first thought you had a 105hp. Secondly If your motor is equipt with a single ignit. coil, it also has a belt driven distributer. This would be an earlier ignition system. So I guess we really don't know what motor you actully have. Can you shed some more light on thiis subject. Now wait a minute could this have something to do with a K1054 kit?

Hi Alcan,

Yes, this motor does have a belt driven distributor on it. The only reason I thought I had a 105 HP was because the cowling says "105" on it. But I wrote the numbers off the plate myself today, so they are correct. Is the belt driven distributor a bad thing??

So would this mean that the ignition system was changed? I was looking at a 105 HP that's listed on ebay right now and it looks nothing like the one I'm considering buying.

Shane

Hi Turtle
I don't know. Having the distributer, the earlier system is not a bad thing. Nothing may be BAD, the problem is you don't know what you have. If you use those numbers when you try to buy parts they'er not going to fit the engine you have. This sounds to me like someone patch together job to me. Hey, the thing might be the best darn motor ever, might be the biggest nightmare also. If you don't own this thing yet, I would think twice. The seller should be 100% up front with the info. If not, walk!

Hi Turtle
There is one thing. There is a note in my books that relates 1975-76 magII models aparently there was a special kit installed on some engines. This kit is called a K1054. Unfortunatly I have no further info on this and I don't know what it pertains to. This could help explain things.

Re: Chrysler Year Please?

I found on another message forum some information about the "special kit" you make reference too. Apparently the Magnapower II Ignition system was not too reliable and they made a special kit to help correct that. What I don't know is what was involved in the kit. I am sure however that it was NOT a conversion kit to a distributor system and one coil.

Also whenever I go to different websites where people deal in Chrysler parts, none are able to get the ignition parts for the Magnapower II. Isn't that interesting? Perhaps that is why the motor I'm looking at went to a different style ignition. According to my Seloc manual, this motor has a type IV ignition, however the CD Module must be under the flywheel. I wonder if the belt distributor is a reliable system? Also I wonder how much of the "Magna II" is left under the flywheel, as opposed to what all was replaced with the distributor?

I sure hate to pass up on this motor especially because the boat is so nice. But I would hate to have to try and fix this thing. Perhaps I'll buy it (for the boat) and sell the engine.

Shane

Turtle
Thank you for passing on the info you were able to find out. I personly don't have a problem with the Chryslers. If they run they'er as good as any motor if you ask me. Just keep in mind the resale value on that rascal will be nill. Depending on the deal, I'd runner till she blew and bury it at sea.

Buy it and sell the motor someone will buy it even if only for parts.
A newer say 1985 or newer more common brand
will be more powerful more reliable and get better gas milage.
