Clams, another problem.
We got the engine running on muffs, had forward reverse, even the tacho came good.
So today we took it down the local ramp, floated her off the trailer and started the engine with little or no problem after tying up to the pontoon.
Gave it some time to warm up then decided to try the forwards and backwards.
No chance.
As we go into forward the engine bogs down, runs like a hairy goat for about 3 seconds then dies.
Tried this quite a few times but couldn't get the thing to run and accelerate in gear.
Fool thing would go to 5k+ in neutral but zip, nada, buggerall in gear.
Any clues.
BTW we are going to go through your entire timing and synchro post tomorrow but I just thought I'd give you a heads up, as my next post might be how to revive a 1150 merc after it has been smoted by an FBH several times.

Go through the timing and synch 1st. ALSO, don't take it over 2000 out of gear - bad.

Lastly check prop pitch 15-19 is most common. More only in very light boat applications.

-W

If carb adjustments were performed on muffs, you'll need to reset it with the engine in the water. On muffs there is no back pressure whereas in the water there is. It greatly affects idle quality. An engine with no load (as in neutral) will rev as if it has 500 HP. Not a good thing to do.
