I have an 1986 140 Merc I/O (3.0L inline 4 cyl, alpha I outdrive), I had the engine rebuilt 3 years ago and just now got around to putting it back in. While I had the engine out I bought a new spline coupler gimbal bearing and gimabal seal as well.
I just got the engine back in and started (note for others that if you put the cap on and all you get is backfire thru the carb, then you have your shaft in 180 degrees out, pull it out and spin the shaft 180 degrees, don?t just spin the cap 180 since theres a 2 to 1 ratio on the cap rotation and the shaft rotation - put the slot back in the receiver and things should work a lot better).
So this brings me to my question ? i?m getting a clanking noise in the back of my engine. I cant tell if it?s coming from the #4 or #3 piston of if its coming from the flywheel or coupler? I mentioned above that I had a issue with the backfire thru the carb, did I dislodge something? The noise sounds like its coming from down low, not so much a lifter ticking, but a clanking? when I rev up the noise increases as well.
Side note, the timing should be 6 BTDC and with this clunking anytime I get close to 6 BFTC it starts to die, it runs the best (when I say best it sounds steady but still had the clunking) when the mark on the wheel is quite a bit off the gauge (say about 2 inches above the gauge so +/- 15-20 BTDC).
I?m guessing my first step is to take off the outdrive and see if that helps the noise (maybe the alignment making the noise?). Any suggestions ? am I barking up the wrong tree?
If a you tube video of the issue would help, let me know I?ll post that.
Thanks all!
