For Clanton and all who can shed some light on this,

Thanks for reading this postI have a 1974 75 HP Chrysler. When torquing the original pinion nut to 85 ft-lbs the drive shaft is very tight. I have not installed the lower gear case housing yet. The two bearings on the drive shaft alone are what I am refering to. I can barely rotate it by hand. When first loosening the nut it was not as tight as 85 ft-lbs. Is there something I am doing wrong? I read your other post on this topic. What is the correct way to check the shimming?

Thanks for reading.

Re: CLANTON: Chrysler question for Clanton

My manual only goes to 73 and only lists a 75 up to 68.But maybe 75 started up again in 74.My
manual says it uses a castle nut on the drive shaft and says finger tight then back off to allow cotter pin to be inserted.
Book says late models use three studs and a seal ring.Earlier models use 2 studs and a gasket.
May not be much help.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. The lower unit on this is different from earlier models. I appreciate it though.

The manual I have is not clear on the shimming or the pinion nut torque. I would look for a factory manual. Sorry cant help.
