Hi there

I recently purchased a used 1989 Mercury 40 classic 4 cylinder that has under 200 hours use...the unit has not been run for at least 2 years and is model No C214400.
I carried out all the usual checks and replaced the Impeller, Cleaned the carbs and plugs.
put on the muffs and ran a 50/1mix thru to ensure the Oil pump on the oil injector was working she seemed fine but when I took her to sea on my 19ft shetland it died if I open the throttle too quickly and if I do it slowly will only get the boat up to 6 Knots and seems to be toiling. Have check with 2 service guys and tried various stuff like checking the stator with an ammeter, checked the Prop and gearbox which are fine, also getting a good spark on all four, seems like a fuel problem but I cannot trace the fault.. can anyone offer any advise am I missing something obvious
Many Thanks

Doug..

Doug,

Does the primer bulb go flat when you experience the difficulties?

If so, check your fuel tank vent and/or the anti siphon valve in the tank. The anti siphon valve is located on the outlet of the tank.

You can test the fuel tank vent by running with the filler cap loose.

Could be the fuel pump if the bulb is staying hard. Does it speed up when you hit the choke? Also, try pumping the bulb and see what happens.

Hi there guys,

already checked the fuel pump and it was 100% checked the fuel filter today and it was fine too...just on the off chance I checked the carbs again and found the bottom one dry!! so I stripped it down and found that the Float needle spring/hanger had slipped off the little tab and was jammed... gonna try and launch in the morning weather permitting will keep you posted

Regards
Doug.

Hehe.... yep you guessed it that was the problem just goes to show that even though you are sure that something is ok because you just serviced it its usually murphys law that thats whats causing the problem.
Just want to thank everyone who took time to reply Im much obliged for you assistance
Engine ran sweet and the boat scooted along at 26 Knots...now I just have to fine tune the carbs and DOUBLE CHECK the timing :)

Regards
Doug Steedman.
