Doing an impeller replacement on my '86 Mariner 45hp (Merc Classic 50) 4cyl 2-stroke motor. First time working on an outboard motor. I pulled the lower unit off and as soon as there was room I believe either the splined seal or seat assembly (parts #31 and 32 on the schematic) fell out. I pulled the other one off the driveshaft but do not remember how it was oriented or where it sat on the driveshaft.

So my question is, how does that seal or seat assembly go on when you re-assemble? One of the parts (splined seal according to the schematic) is thinner on one side and both are splined on one end and smooth on the other. I believe based on the schematic that the seat goes on the first then the seal goes on with the narrower side facing down then when it goes in the seal gets pressed into the seat to make a seal at the top of the driveshaft. I tried to take pictures of the way I understand it to ensure I am re-installing correctly. Can someone confirm?

Appreciate the help and advice! Link to schematic

I believe if you look inside one, you'll see the splines taper to virtually nothing. That one goes on bottom, splines up. I believe you have them correctly in your first photo.
