Hello,
having some issues with my outboard.

I have a 1989 45hp classic 50 mercury outboard

I bought this motor a couple months ago from a dealer. It started great and idled fine in their parking lot.......

First time out it started great, ran great with good power for about 15 minutes then I lost about 80% of my power/speed. Engine did not stop running but kind of sputtered at full throttle.

We thought maybe one or more of the plugs was fouled. Also notice a crack in the fuel line. I took out the spark plugs and cleaned them off. Motor ran with great power for awhile, but then lost power as before.

So, I replace all the spark plugs. I also replaced the fuel line with a 3/8" line.
Now, the motor starts and dies after only about 10 seconds. It will run longer if I can get to the bulb and pump it.

Do I have the wrong fuel line? If so, what size do I need? I tossed the old one already since it was cracked. But I do remember that it was a smaller diameter than the new one.

Next, I did replace the plugs with the plugs of the same make/model of those that were in it.
Was I supposed to do anything to the plugs other than just screw them in.
I did check the wires, they are in proper order.

Sounds like the carbs need to be cleaned. The problem is that as old gas evaporates in the carbs it leaves varnish behind. You put new gas in and it runs good for a while until the varnish breaks loose and clogs up something such as a main carburetor jet.just my $.02 worth
