Many of us on the Gulf Coast are watching this storm with great interest. As of 2 PM EST winds were 70 MPH moving northwest at 14. The storm is expected to remain slow and gain hurricane strength by the weekend after it passes over the Yucatan. Some predictions are for Brownsville, Tx which puts my area on the 'dirty' side of the storm. Either way, any more rain here and we will be evacuated from our end of the island.

I have two really good sources for watching the storm and getting updates.

NOAA
Hurricanes2003.com

Hey Ladyfish,Us folks down here in Corpus will also be watching this storm closely. We've already had our share of rain thus far this summer.I'don't look forward to a hurricane in the least.Last one that reeked havoc here was Celia in 69'.Maybe it'll turn and go into rural Mexico.

Re: "Claudette"

I guess we both have reason to watch this one carefully. The last to hit Galveston was Alicia and that was 20 years ago. Sounds like Corpus is also due for a 'biggun.' The odds are definetly not in our favor.

Even a tropical depression can make a mess of things for any of us on the coast since we've had so much rain in the past 2 weeks.

For now, I guess we'll just keep watching and start preparing for the worst.

'Tis the season. :(

Re: "Claudette"

Thanks fishhunter, me too .I need a few more pieces of plywood and some other things .Think I'll get em tonight. No use staying in denial until the day before.Funny thing is ,the only thing we really don't want badly damaged is the trees in the yard. ;) The house can be fixed.Even if it goes into Brownsville Corpus will get pounded with the rain bands.Same scenario up the coast.Bands extend to the east.just depends on what size and strength it gains.Let's hope for the best.

Ah, Shucks.. Come on ya'll, Hurricanes are fun! Right?

As a Florida native and having spent all of my 30 years living here in south Florida, I know all too well what it feels like to have one bearing down on you... It's no fun... I feel for anyone who's in a hurricanes path...

Hopefully she'll just stay out in the gulf, get the cloud tops sheared off and fizzle out into nothing...

Re: "Claudette"

That'd be nice snapperbait.I think the only thing that concerns anyone that lives on the southern coast is a direct or near direct hit. That's when the excitement ends and the reality begins. I'm thinking fishing might pickup in the days preceeding :D

Hurricane parties are fun but thats the only thing fun.

I hope Snapperbait is right and it fizziles out. I have my doubts. It seems like every hurricane season we tempt fate, our luck is bound to run out sooner or later. I'm not an alarmist usually, I just have a bad feeling this year. It must be because all our remodeling on the house is done, the landscaping is perfect after 12 years of hard work, the boat runs great and things just seem too perfect.(Must be a Catholic thing).

Re: "Claudette"

M.Y. thats the biggest problem...finding a place to stay. Hotel and motels are booked for 100 miles from here when a storm comes in. We have three vehicles, a boat, a jetski, a dog and two cats. Not many hotels want you if you can even find one available. We'll just bring our camping stuff and drive toward the dry side of the storm.

The biggest problem here is evacuation. We are in the middle of tourist season where the population goes from 60,000 to 1 million on any given weekend. People living on the island have a tough time getting off in time. We only have one route, the causeway. Its only a four lane road which they promise to make both north and south ALL north exiting lanes. This will be a first. During the last big storm people were stranded on the causeway with boats, trailers, etc. when the storm hit, it was a mess.

Not wishing you Texas guys any bad luck, but we've had our share of them in recent years. We don't really appreciate how convenient our lives are until you lose the little things like electricity and water. The only thing they don't seem to tear up is the things you would like to see gone. That's still there when the wind quits blowing.

Re: "Claudette"

SnR, I can't imagine anything worse than a hurricane. We lived in Pasadena when Allicia hit, moved to Sugarland the very next year. We were scared to death. Winds were still 100 mph all the way to downtown Houston and so many tornados they couldn't keep up with them. We didn't have full power for 30 days. Being one of those damn yanks I had no idea what a hurricane was really like or that living 80 miles inland we would be affected. Boy was I wrong.

I don't wish a hurricane on anyone. Florida has really been hit hard in past years as well as Louisiana. The only thing good to come out of Andrew was new building codes for all on the coast.

Re: "Claudette"

Hi LadyFish,

Here in the coastal NE, we have had some pretty bad hurricanes.

Gloria in '85 was really bad here on Long Island when we got hit with the dirty side of the storm.

No evacuation was ordered until the storm was already bearing down on us with 145 MPH winds, and the exit routes were already blocked, so we had to hunker down and ride the storm out.

The aftermath left us without a way out of our street due to downed trees and power lines for a week and a half, and no power for 3 weeks.

The good thing about that storm was that it drew the community together and I got to meet alot of the neighbors I would have otherwise never would have met when we all had to pitch in together to clear the streets of downed trees and power lines because nobody came to our town for a week and a half to help us.

It sure was a fun time, but I hope I never have to do that again.

Bob in '92 was pretty bad too!

Hope this storm peters out before getting to you, but if it does hit, I hope that you will be able to get out of there.

Kenny
