How can I clean my Large canvas boat bag? It is red, and very soiled. LL Bean says only to use Woolit, and "spot" clean it. Can't imagine that will work. It is mildewed in some areas, and very soiled on the handles... anyone have any suggestions or experience with this??

Welcome to iboats.

Launder it just like a pair of jeans. If waterproofing is a concern, you'll have to retreat it.

If I launder it in the washing machine, won't the colors run? That is my concern. If it does, I won't be able to use it anymore. Of course, I'm not using it right now either!! Have you laundered one is the machine?

The colors did fine on those I've done. They're very colorfast or they'd stain your boat when wet. Use cold water. It actually pulls oil and grease out better. Pretreat the stained areas. Treat it just like any other laundry. The tumbler kind of machine is better. An agitator can snag drawstrings if yours has one.

I have washed many, in the washing machine. (My Wife loves LL Bean!) They come out fine, no color bleed at all, and just a little fade. Also if the fall apar, LL Bean will replace them.

If your concerned about color bleed, put a couple of cups of white vinegar in both cycles. Red is most prone to bleeding.
