I would like to clean the cooling system in my 1965 9.5hp Johnson. I have been told that T.S.P. works well, but what I am wondering is if it would be best to use hot water in the barrel and if I should remove the thermostat? Or is there a better solution to use for this?

Re: Cleaning cooling system

In my opinion TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) won't do any good (no harm either). It is a degreasing agent often used prior to painting wood, walls, floors, etc. Grease in the cooling system is not your problem. There is a commercial product called Salt-Away that is sold as a coolant flush. Although there is undoubtedly differing opinions on the matter it is my opinion that these things work best as prevention not as cure. Anything strong enough to dissolve aluminum hydroxide, aluminum oxide, or aluminum carbonate (aluminum corrosion) will preferentially eat the aluminum metal and not the corrosion. Salt (sea salt) is easy to remove with a fresh water flush, it is the corrosion and hard alkalai deposits that are the problem. If you know the cooling sytem has blockages, they are best removed with a pick and scraper.

Re: Cleaning cooling system

Thank you for the response and input.

My cooling system is not blocked it just has some flakey deposits on it and I am worried that a flake, that is out of reach for cleaning by hand, may come up the tube and block the thermostat.
