As with 2 cycle mowers and trimmers, some times you have to remove the muffler and clean the carbon buildup from the exhaust ports. Is this recommened to do on 2 cycle evinrude? Exhaust thru prop, remove prop and clean the deposits. 115hp '98. Thanks!!

Re: Cleaning exhaust ports

I would say no mostly because almost all of the exhaust is buried in the engine casting, no way to get to it.

By the time the exhaust hits the prop it has already traveled 2'-3' and would have left most of the deposits up stream farther.

Search FAQs for "decarb", don't know how much it gets out of the exhaust but it really cleans out the engine.

I believe he is talking about the exhaust ports in the side of the cylinder. Yes, mowers and stuff carbon up there. For some reason, outboards very rarely do. Some of the air cooled ones do, but they are just mower engines anyway.

I have found that the best way to clean carbon from a engine, and keep it clean is to use carbon guard, as sold by BRP. Just follow the directions on the can. I usually don't believe in snake oil in a can, but this stuff works.
