Cleaning exhaust ports

As with 2 cycle mowers and trimmers, some times you have to remove the muffler and clean the carbon buildup from the exhaust ports. Is this recommened to do on 2 cycle evinrude? Exhaust thru prop, remove prop and clean the deposits. 115hp '98. Thanks!!
