I am troubleshooting a low WOT problem and just got the fuel tank uncovered.

The whole top part is covered with a black wet slime. I have no clue at all what it is. It wipes off pretty easily.

The tank is aluminum and attached a pictue of a similiar tank.

How do I get the fuel pickup out to see if it is plugged? Is it as simple as unscrewing the piece that the fuel line attaches to and pull it out? the fule line itself is extremely soft and easy to pinch shut so that itself may be my problem. I have some A1 line to replace it with.

If the pickup is plugged up, and the tank needs to be cleaned out, how does one go about doing that?

Yes....And the fitting your hose attaches to may also be an anti siphon valve, meaning it would have a check ball and spring it that could be faulty.

I would remove the fuel level sensor and remove any and all liquid from the tank. If varnish or sludge remains in the tank I use carb cleaner to clean the sludge from the tank. Not the stuff in the spray bombs but the stuff that comes in a bucket like you would soak a carb in. Just pour it into the tank and keep agitating it.
