Hi there! we have a 20 foot Montarey which spends the summer int he water. come this time of the year the hull and outdrive look pretty crummy. In the past I have paid to have the boat acid washed. I would like to start doing that myself.

The trailer is galvanized, from reading a bit acid wash and galvanized trailers don't mix well.

any recommendations on acid washing on the trailer? worst case I can try talking my neighbor into lifting the boat off the trailer onto concrete blocks with his crane.

thank you for the help!

Re: Cleaning hull with galvanized trailer

there are a number of threads here on how to remove a boat from a trailer. Neighbor's crane seems the easiest!

I've seen my galv trailer get ugly when I used toilet bowl cleaner (oxalic acid I think) so next time I just made sure to keep it hosed off during the process. Looks like it's only a superficial effect, and I don't care what the trailer looks like, so it works for me.

In previous years when you paid to have it done, was it washed sitting on that trailer ? If so, have you had any problems? The marina I use gives my boat an acid wash every year while it's sitting on a galvanized trailer. I've not noticed any damage to the trailer - in fact, it looks very clean :)

all -

sounds like the gist is to get the boat off the trailer!

I'm not sure how they did it. I should have asked :)

When you acid wash a boat, you use A LOT of fresh water to flush the acid from the hull. Same with the trailer. It isn't as though you're going to immerse it in the stuff. Home Cookin' has it right. Just rinse it all down really well.
