Well, I finally got all the parts from my local marina, so I can rebulid my LU. Some seals needed to be pressed in so I let them do it. My question is before I put it all back togeter, I need to clean the prop shaft and grears to remove debris such as dust, dog hair, sawdust, etc. What is recommended as a good degreaser/ cleaner that won't leave any residue. In other situations I used starting fluild as a great degreaser, even safe on most plastics. But is there a residue ?

Thanks,
Tom

Carb cleaner, brake cleaner.I use a cleaner called Purple Power and a wire brush.
Dawn dish detergent works good too.
Most won't leave a residue and if it does it's not that big a deal.Once you add oil it will disolve anything on it.
Change the oil after a couple of hours.J

Not sure why you want to clean the prop shaft, you have to put a layer of grease on it anyway.
Wipe it off and grease it up in my opinion.

I think he's just wanting to make sure it's clean to begin with and then grease it up with clean grease during assembly. Just a guess, not a mind reader.. I get what he's thinking. Someone told him it needed to be super clean and he's just trying to follow the advice he was given.

That said, follow jerryjerry05's advice and you'll be fine.

Re: Cleaning lower unit

I'm a big fan of "if it's worth doing,it's worth doing right." This was no easy task to try for the first time. I really don't want to do this again anytime soon. My shop isn't the most tidiest, and I don't want any contaminates in the gearcase or on the parts when I put them back in. Thanks for all the replies.
