I have been disassembling and cleaning up a 1955 evinrude 7.5 fleetwin. I have already got all nuts bolts springs, and etc. cleaned up and sparkling and got all paintable parts stripped and ready to go but all thats left is after I piece apart the main motor itself I am having trouble with how to have it cleaned up. Is there a cleaner I can buy to soak it in or do I have to take it to a shop?? Even so should I clean it up at all or just leave it as it is and assemble all other new parts I have purchased?? The only real problem it had was a bad float and run down carb seals, other then that it ran like a champ. I just was not sure if I would be able to consider it restored if I just put that greasy old run down motor back on.

Re: Cleaning motor??

It sounds like you didn't disassemble the block. So, I would just use hot water and detergent and a parts cleaning brush then repaint. A solvent like paint thinner won't hurt anything. But be careful with anything like carb cleaner as it will dissolve many primers.
