Cleaning the bilge

My engine and drive are out - I'd like to clean up the bilge and maybe paint it. Are there special cleaners that work better for paint prep? Is there a "bilge paint" or something similar out there; something I can brush on?

Other than not looking clean, is there any downside to not cleaning the bilge out. Is this a regular maintenance item I should do?

Interlux makes a bilge paint called bilge kote. it calls for sanding though, not just cleaning.

Having a clean bilge especially in a I/O board allows you to see if something is wrong with you motor and systems. If I see anything in my bilge something is not right.

if the bilge isn't clean, how well was the rest of it taken care of?...not that you're necessarily selling. it'll only get dirtier on its own.

Re: Cleaning the bilge

I think some of it depends on how much time and money you want to put into it. On my last boat I wanted to do the same thing but had spent most of my budget already, wanting to get atleast something in there I went the cheaper route. I used sanding sponges and wire brushes I had on hand to prep it all, then wiped all down a few times with acetone to remove all oil residue. I bought a quart of rustoleum white industrial oil paint from home depot and some cheapy brushes(about $20.00 in materials) brushed it all out with two coats. Once dry it looked quite good and I had the boat for four years after that and it looked as good when I sold it as it did when I first painted it. The buyer even commented on how neat and clean the bilge looked. There are many ways you can go the above was what I went with due to money, time, and avalibility. You prob already know but now is an excelent time to make sure everything is good order as far as bilge pump pad, drain plug hole, wire managers, blower hose mounts, etc all that stuff you can't really get to once the engine and drive are back in. good luck

Re: Cleaning the bilge

I've tried most everything to clean a bilge and what I found worked best for me is waterless hand cleaner. I was cleaning out a bilge one time for a major rebuild and couldn't get it clean enough, after a couple of hours I went in to eat lunch and washed my hands with waterless hand cleaner and it took everything off easily. I went straight back out and cleaned the bilge up in just a few minutes with a soft bristle brush and the hand cleaner.

Looks like it's time to try cleaning out the bilge. Using the products mentioned above, is there any danger if it gets splashed onto the engine, the electrical connections, etc?

Thanks Wingnutt,
I'll tell you this, if you can keep your bilge dry it doesn't get dirty. I have only cleaned it once in 2 years. One thing I had to add was a sump pump because my A/C condensation pan drain line emptied in the bilge. Drove me crazy. Now it discharges overboard.

you might try Gunk, its a spray-on engine cleaner/degreaser and works well on cars and boats, works best in warm enviro just don't hose down your distributor too much, cleans all surfaces doesn't seem to hurt anything just rinse off with water.

Not at all, I know when it comes time to sell her and upgrade mine might fetch a few more $$ than one that wasn't in as good as shape. And like I said I have only cleaned it ONCE in 2 years.

Re: Cleaning the bilge

I've tried most of the automotive engine cleaners and while they sort of work, I've been disappointed in their performance. I was getting nowhere with them when I switched to hand cleaner.
