Cleanup Rusty Metal

I have a battery tray on the pickup truck and a mower deck, that getting pretty corroded. Is there a good product, that might help dissolve, the rust and maybe seal the surface?

The tray I like to coat with something and then repaint. The mower deck is an older one, that already has a large rust hole through in it (that will need repaired). Just want to ty to preserve it as long as possible.

Look up POR 15

and I would get the mower welded up then go with maybe a spay on bedliner.

First step is to neutralize the acid on the metal.
In a container mix 3 cups of water with half box of baking soda. Put the solution on the metal and watch it bubble. Rinse off with water, and reapply the solution, and rinse off until there is no bubbling. Let dry and wire brush most of the rust off. Use a good, exterior grade metal paint & do several coats.

Yup, once your metal starts getting pitted sand and bead blastings are out unless your willing to do some welding.
I have never tried the chemical stripping of rust I have just used a high speed wire wheel on my grinder or a flapper disk for a "MILD" clean up.
(For pin holes I have drilled them out and welded in carriage bolts and cut the stem flush)

What no one has mentioned...... why not replace the tray in the truck? POR 15 is allot of money and depending on the amount of work...... maybe replacing the tray would be easier.

Yup, POR 15 is great stuff but spendy. You didn't state how old the truck is, but if the battery tray is available i'd change it. Do the neutralize dose after getting the old tray out, a wire wheel and some Rustoleum will work also.

Naval Jelly or muratic acid will clean up the rust, be careful, it's acid!. Jasco has a product (Jacso Metal Prep?) that's a "rust converter", apply the liquid, let do it's thing over night and paint the next day.

I recently purchased the 01' truck and this was the first time I had the battery out (to repair leaking windshield washer line).

The tray is intact (and removable), it's just starting to get surface rust, like many of them do. When the weather warms, I like to take it back out clean it and paint it up real good.

This truck will be a until-death-due-us-part vehicle, so I'd like to keep it as rust-free as possible.

Rust is cancer. Remove and replace, then maintain. OR remove, sand blast, coat w/the stuff that turns rust black and acts like a primer. Mental block on the name. Paint to suit. then maintain.

I have used both POR 15 and Duro Extend. IMO, Extend followed by a good topcoat works just as good. After I treated and painted the mower deck, I would spray some rattle can bedliner on the bottom. I do this to my mower. It keeps the wet grass from sticking. I re-rattle it as needed because the rocks and sticks I mow over tend to blast the liner off after a while.

I did the same project on my old CJ7 using the Extend and some rattle can paint from the auto store to match the Jeep. It still looked good when I traded it off 5 or 6 years later. You definitely want to use the baking soda/water mix to neutralize the acid before you spray anything on it, though - if you want it to last, anyway.
