I just finished repainting my jon boat and now I want to clear coat it. I can't seem to find any clear in a gallon. Just spray cans. I rolled the paint and would like to roll the clear too. Has anyone seen it in a gallon? It is a 16 foot jon and I am afraid it would take too many rattlecans to finish it plus I feel that I have more control with a roller than a spray can. I sure don't want any runs in the finish. Whatcha got?????

Re: clear coat

Check at your local tile flooring store. A few decades ago we put in a synthetic stone floor and got clear acrylic in gallons to roll on the floor. The stuff was good for everything and even on the floor only required annual refinish. Plus like true varnish does, it incorporates with the old layer to form a new finish.

and now I want to clear coat it.

Ayuh,.... Why,..??

A clear coat must be compatible with whatever you used for the base coat...
You really should use the Same manufacturer for both...

Re: clear coat

why???? Because I want it to be shiny. So you mean to tell me that a clear coat made by Rustoleum may have a negative reaction to the boat paint I used?

Re: clear coat

Ayuh,... if ya want Shine,... Polish, 'n Wax the paint ya got....

Clear coat is overhyped,...
If you scratch your paint now, it's easily fixable...
Clear coat it, it's 4 times the effort....

Rustoleum makes atleast 2 clears, an enamal, 'n a Lacquer... I've bought, 'n used both..
There's a Good chance the Lacquer based 1 will turn your paint to crinkle-finish....

Polish, 'n waxin' is what makes 'em Shine....
Color sand if necessary 1st...

Re: clear coat

If you had said anything besides Rustoleum, I'd have said you might be able to get away with mixing paint manufacturers. But definitely not with Rusto. They put "proprietary" additives in to help inhibit rust, and it makes it darn near impossible to coat over. I had a car when I was 16 that I figured I would cover up some rust spots on. Used Rusto once. Next time I used what ever was on the sale shelf and it bubbled right off the Rusto. I eventually sanded it down, and recoated it, just to still have it bubble up and peel off. I went back and got Rusto, coated it, and it worked fine. Definitely has some interesting stuff in it.

Also, as Bondo said, there are different types of Rusto, make sure you get compatible types.

Re: clear coat

I used Rustoleum clear on the top sides of my last boat. I only used it because I had painted it with Rustoleum Metallics metal flake paint and it came out dull. The clear glossed it up nicely. However, the clear did not hold up well. It flaked it some areas and got chalky in others. I wasn't a fan of Rusto Clear.
