Clear Hose Test Supplies Question

Reading the Volvo Penta Gas Engine Overheat Diagnosis manual, it list some supplies to perform a clear hose test on the Raw Water Supply test and take readings from a Pressure Gauge and Vacuum Gauge. Looking at the picture in the manual it is hard to tell how the Gauge hoses are connecting to the PVC that is inline between the Clear Hose and the Engine's Black hose.

Can anyone expand on how to properly install the gauge? Is it just screwing the 1/8" NPT Barb x 1/4" Hose fitting into the PVC?

The PVC pipe is drilled and threaded for the 1/8 NPT fittings.

What size hole to drill? And can you internally thread Sch 40 PVC?

I wonder if you could drill the hole and then screw the fitting into the PVC? Let it thread itself.
