clear line from carb to fuel pump -- purpose?

Assume the line is clear for a reason. What's its purpose and what does one watch for in the line? Application is a late 1970s Mercruiser 165.

Also, the fuel pump on this engine is a serviceable pump. Anyone know if rebuild kits are still available?

Thanks.

that line is called a "telltale" It alerts you when you have a ruptured diaphram in the pump. the fuel from a leaking pump goes directly into the carb preventing you from being blown up. no idea about rebuilding kits.

Good luck on finding rebuild kits... Lots of places to find the replacement pump. Someone told me they (rebuild kits) were available on-line, but when asked, they would not answer with info. I'm referring to pump # 62092T (can find on iboats, crowleymarine, amazon, etc). A bit pricier that other fuel pumps I've had experience with. BTW, I am one of those that had fuel in the sight-flow tube that told me my fuel pump diaphragm was shot. Too many years of sitting unused with ethanol fuel in it. Boat ran like crap until I replaced the fuel pump.

Thanks. That makes sense even to me. So with that function in the marine fuel pump it's not even a viable option to mount an inexpensive external fuel/water filter and use a cheap automotive fuel pump come the day when a pump replacement is necessary.

The things I'm learning.....

Ayuh,.... Addin' a canister type fuel filter is Always a Good idea,....

Usin' an automotive pump, Never is,... Those pumps will be available for a long time to come....

This begs a new question. If a cannister filter is added inline before the fuel pump are the cannisters efficient enough that opening the bell on the fuel pump is no longer necessary? Have to assume that done too frequently the tightening and loosening will eventually lead to a little distortion and potential seepage or worse.

In most cases ,additional filtering is removed so as not to add a restriction.10 Micron sounds pretty efficient to me

Hey Twolane.... if you use fuel pump 18-7278, then I think I found the rebuild (diaphragm) kit you were looking for...
http://www.**********/parts/search/...L PUMP AND CARBURETOR (OLD DESIGN)/parts.html
Part number 49089A 1
(Dang...guess the link wont copy/paste correctly... I found this one on boats. net. Should come up in a search.)

Is this it?

That is it. Thanks very much. Was able to use the part number you provided at that company's website. Came right up with the kit I was interested in. Appreciate the heads-up and the help.
