basic facts: I just purchased a used 1991 Celebrity walkaround with a 1991Yamaha 200 TXRP - the outboard ran like a charm - for piece of mind, I just installed 2 new batteries with brass marine battery connection posts (the old batteries were a few years old) - I ran it all day Saturday with my family without any issues - as we were ready to go home for the day, the outboard would not start and all I heard was the infamous "click, click , click". I checked the wiring on the battery side and took a reading of the batteries with a voltmeter - readings of 12.70 on batt#1 and 12.57 on batt#2. I followed the battery cables through the Perko battery selector and to the starter and the solenoid... all seemed tight and looked fine. I took another reading to the battery cables to the starter and to the solenoid and the reading was over 12.60. And still no ability to crank the outboard and sometimes there are no signs of voltage on the Yamaha oem battery gauge on the boat. Also, the power tilt and trim stopped working... am I overlooking anything? Please help!

On another note, I just wanted to comnmend this site... a ton of helpful info... much thanks!!!

Re: click click click... pls help

Hi, raylo.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to the Engine FAQs and do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

Sounds to me like the ground cable connection to the engine block is corroded, but do the tests to verify that.

Good luck, and let us know what you find.

Re: click click click... pls help

Just got some time to check out the boat... and you were correct...:D.

Tested the battery cables by using jumper cables directly to the starter and I was able to start the motor right up and the t/t worked too. I bought new 2 awg wiring and will be replacing the OEM Yamaha wiring this weekend. I guess after 17 years the salt water got to the cables.

I appreciate the advice... great forum!
