Clicking from battery - no starting or tilt/trim

One of my 1997 200 Yamaha 2-strokes wouldn't start today. When I applied the tilt/trim button, the tilt/trim motor made a soft sound but would move. And, when I tried to start it, the engine made a little noise, but wouldn't crank over.

I tested the voltage of the batteries (2) and both had good voltage. I suspect it is a cable problem, but the cables look clean at the battery and inside the engine.

Where should I check for voltage and voltage drop?

Thanks

Richard

Hi, Richard.

Check out the "Outboard wont start" article in Engine FAQs for troubleshooting the starter circuit.

Visual inspection is not useful for detecting resistance in a connection.

Good luck. :)

Your voltage may be good, but the amperage to turn that motor may not. Ensure your batteries are fully charged.

do you have a dc multimeter and a basic dc knowledge? a friend to turn the key is helpful.

Problem solved!

Problem was not with the cables, but rather with the Perko battey selector switch. Switch had a break that did not send power to the engine.

Thanks for all who contributed.

Richard
