Clicking in foward - 50hp

Hi All,

I'm putting a 50hp Mercury (early 80s - 83 maybe) back on my grandfather's boat. It's been off since 2000. I've attached everything and just finished the cables. Before I attached the cables it was in neutral and the prop spun both ways like it should. I would click it into reverse and it would spin (along with the power head) properly. However, when I put it in forward, I'm hearing a clicking noise and the power head isn't turning. Same happened when I attached the cables.

Any thoughts?

Secondary, the serial number is 6224664. Anyone know the year?

Thank you in advance.

My 120hp does the same thing and works just fine. It's called a "ratcheting clutch dog"

Thanks for the quick response. I have a boat with a Merc I/O so this is a little new to me. So if/when I get it started, and put it in drive, I'll be ok?

Thanks again!
