Mercruiser outdrive makes a clicking noise when you put it in gear (both forward & reverse). If you put it in forward and watch the prop it clicks and the prop moves slowly. Then it will all the sudden catch and work great. Same in reverse. Now with the engine off and the boat in forward gear you can turn the prop one direcrion, but not the other. In reverse you can turn it either way. HELP!!

Re: Clicking noise outdrive

Standing behind your outdrive and in forward gear your prop should lock counter clockwise, reverse should lock clock wise.Laying on your back with a flashlight look for the brass line up slot behind your outdrive .Have someone shift forward to reverse while looking (engine off)hide keys.Your problem may be in the linkage that needs adjusting.Especially watch what happens when shifting in reverse at the sliding brass slot. You will get more help if you list what engine ,what drive, what year. good luck.
