My 1975 merc 850 is making a clicking or knocking noise from the mid section and or Lower Unit. It makes the sound in forward at mid and high speed. As the prop spins faster the knock is faster it almost sounds like something in the mid section is hitting the case inside the midsection. Any ideas?

Re: clicking sound from the midsection and or LU

Just to add is it normal at the shift controller from n to forward there is no actual ingagement untill I'm almost to the end of the full throttle and the handle has about a inch of final play from low to full throttle. There is no movement from N to F untill the end and when it engages it will kill the motor so I have to raise the cold start to keep it going then once it kind of starts to move the boat it goes to fast and I have to back off the throttle I find it too sensitive. I just had the motor back from the shop and they replaced the ignition pack and trigger so I wonder if they had to reset the gear adjustment and throttle also and that could be why my lower unit is thumping?

Pulled plug and found metal shavings in LU and oil was milky, confirmed with local marina that its the LU. Pulling LU apart and I will post what was found. IE gear or bearing. Anyone have a LU they want to part with for cheep? I have dumped in more than this motor will ever be worth.

Sounds suspiciously like my 68 evinrude problem. forward gear and possibly clutch dog have rounded the elbow tooth? Once they are more rounded it will just continually slam in and out of gear as they catch each other going around. Easy to replace on my oldie but i dont know about yours.
