I just changed my impeller on a 1987 chri craft 210 ltd with a alpha 1 gen one outdrive. It has a 260/v8 merc in it. I had tons of porblem changing the impeller but that was a whole nother post. But I final got it back on and it keep the temp cool. But now when i shift it into gear it makes like a clicking/ grinding nose for like 3 sec and then goes away is this normal or not? Also should u put it into gear just on muffs?

Is the clickng/grinding noise happening when you put it in gear and rev the throttle and let off? If this is it it may be the weight of the prop spining the propshaft/clutch dog faster than the gears are moving when you let off the throttle. This would be normal don't do it anymore.

If the clicking/grinding occurrs as you shift into gear and just idle that's not right.

Does it happen when you let off the power or when you start to put the power to it? Is it a stainless prop?

I dont even have the prop on it right now. It happens i guess when i put it in gear for like 3 sec and then it stops.

Sounds like the shift cable is out of adjustment. Problem is, they don't just fall out of adjustment. If it's not going all the way into gear, you may be about due for a new lower shift cable.

Which is it??

What is your idle rpm set at??

I have a 87 5.7 alpha 1 neautral to foreward 3-4 clicks goes in gear.. reverse some times a light clunk. I was told on this forum last year this was normal and marina confirmed this also. I put my rpms down to about 600 and it does not do it that much.

Ok so it's not the weight of the prop turning the shaft/dog faster than the gears on deceleration.

Is it clicclicclicclicgaarrruummppp? That's usually worn clutchdog/gear lugs. If ot engages solidly it's a live with it. As stated adjusting the cable may help.

IT only happens for about 3 seconds when i put it into gear and then it goes away. It was not doing this before i changed the impeller. It sounds like somthing is engaging. I am just wondering if it is ok to leave it like this or should i take the lower off again? I dk what it could be.

Re: Clicking when i Shift into gear??

Is it possible that when you put the two halves of the outdrive back together, the shift shaft maybe moved around a little bit and isn't in the same alighnment? (where the shaft from the upper portion of the outdrive mates witht hte shaft from the lower half).. maybe it's off my a notch.

Don't know if this could happen, but it could be it..

I dk if that is possible, if that was the case it would do it all the time, i would think. I dk if it would be the cable casue i didnt do anthing to them and i dont think it was doing that before i took off the lower unit. I am just wanting to know if this is normal or if somthing is wrong?
