clickity -click sound only at start_up?.

hi guys, i am fairly new to i/o power. i have a 21 4winns with 260 merc {350}+ alpha 1 leg. when i start it {especially with the cover off} i can hear a clickety click sound for 1-2 minutes .its coming from the very back {pardon my ignorance}where the engine and leg join?. what is it? thanks in advance

Could be a few different things. First guess would be a starter bendix that is sticking and not fully dissengaging the starter. Second guess would be drive related (gimbal bearing/coupler or U-joints). When was the last time drive was removed for maintenance,lubrication and alignment check ?

thanks for the response waterone1, had the imoeller changed ,mechanic showed me u-joints ect. everything looks good on the back end . i will have a closer listen around the starter area. thanks again
