Hey, so i had to replace a burnt out starter on my 68' Johnson. The old starter spun Clockwise as crazy as that sounds. I tried it with just jumper cables with it off the engine and it spins clockwise. when I put a new starter in, it spins counter clockwise and does not engage the Bendix gear just spins and doesn't make the gear fly up. I checked all the connections several times everything is good on that end. So I put the old starter back in to see what it does it still has enough life to barely turn the engine but enough to spin up the Bendix(very slowly)....on the clockwise rotation...
I took the Bendix gear completely apart, cleaned everything, lubed everything and tired the new starter again with the same results, spins the Bendix shaft but does not make the gear fly up.

The old starter that was in it was not original to the motor, as there was some homemade mounting on it I believe it was off a 60hp but just guessing on that.

I'm lost seeing as basically all drive portions of the starters turn counter clockwise.
the Engine model is a V4al-20a

Any help would be appreciated

it is the geared down starter, the Bendix is one piece and the starter motor is one piece.

Is your battery hooked up correctly ?----Is the + from solenoid going to the post on the starter ?----Looks like a rebuilt / new starter.-----Sourced from where ?------Did somebody have the starter apart ?

The battery and all connections are clean, I did not touch the connections on the solenoid they are in same position as they were with the old starter.
No the starter has not been apart, there is no part number on it, but the company I bought it from contacted the manufacturer and they said they only come in CCW rotations. Every marine person I've talked to said the same thing, that its odd that the original starter turns CW as everything in that industry is supposed to be CCW rotation.

Look at it mate.------The starter has to turn opposite !-----The unit on top reverses the direction so that the motor starts runs the correct way.-----Some folks you are talking to are totally miss- informed !

Which they couldn't wrap their heads around it turning clockwise...
That being said if a person swapped the power supply from the battery and the power to the starter on the solenoid would that cause the start to spin clockwise or would a person need a different starter?

I'm going to toss in a guess here. My guess is that the starter has the wrong end-cap/brush holders, making it run backwards from how it is supposed to run. Yes it is supposed to run clockwise, which is reversed by the bendix' reduction gear, Then, the bendix (CCW) is reversed again, making the flywheel turn clockwise.
