i have a 1973 boca grande passmaster 26' powered by a mercruiser 888.engine is ford 302 and I think the s.n.# is 8r112671.it has a san juan engineering and mfg. heat exchanger, but it does'nt match what i see in the clymer manual. seems to be a lot of pressure in system when we ran it.my friend(i think) set it up like the one on his 351 in his boat.it ran well for a while, but he could'nt get the carb and/or timing right.I don't know? THE next day would not start and i found lots of gas in oil.Changed the oil and filter and pulled plugs and cleaned. when I got to the #8 cylinder it was full of coolant.could this be caused by hooking up the closed cooling to flow wrong direction. If anyone knows about this PLEASE HELP! also need info on block off plates for the exhaust riser elbows.WHy is there a pin hole in them? thanks

Re: closed cooling for mercruiser 888

When you have a closed cooling circuit your engine runs exactly like a car, regarding this. There is no way coolant can make it's way into the cylinders except from some kind of error.

Sounds like a blown gasket.

The sea water that has been used for cooling in the exchanger can be returned to the sea in more ways, depending on your cooler design. If the engine was originally sea water cooled and the closed circuit is a bolt-on, you may even have a completely different layout of coolant in/out. Water cooled exhaust manifold etc. that was meant to be cooled by sea water 'on the way out' may in your case be cooled either by the closed circuit or by the returning sea water.

Still, coolant (from the closed circuit) in cylinders and fuel in the oil sounds like a blown gasket and maybe defective piston rings/seized cylinder(s).

Do a compression test to get an idea.

joebeak,

What are you talking about  ? UU gave you some help already and I'm sure more would be along soon. It's only been a few hours since you even posted your question. Complaining about not getting immediate responses like you have is very likely to turn others away from trying to help you out. With that attitude nobody will want to help you out. So take a chill pill and calm down man.

James
