Closed cooling Riser gasket question

Mercruiser 5.7 1999 converted to full closed cooling this year when I installed new 5.7 long block and new manifolds and risers.

Everything worked great San juan full kit. I used the block off gaskets supplied with the kit. They were soft graphite like merc's. Till today Seawater in the block on the closed cooling side. Only place it could come from is riser gaskets or heat exchanger. The heat exchanger pressure checks fine. I popped off the risers and found the gaskets failed. They had no core just soft graphite. I picked up the merc gaskets and the shop said I did not need the block off plates with these is that true?

Anyone ever use these without plates?

I always use the metal block off plates sandwiched between 2 gaskets in that situation

Only if the new gaskets have a metal core. Otherwise you need the SS plates.
