the last few inches of the engine harness, the end farthest from the engine is split on mine. doesn't seem to affect performance, but still. it was there for a reason. so, i'm kicking around a couple of ideas for "fixing" it.

1] heat-shrink tubing
or
2] get a thin bicycle inner tube, like the ones for those skinny-tired road bikes, slip it over the length of the harness, zip tie it on so it doesn't slip, then wrapping all that in convoluted protective tubing
or
3] other?

guessing, real rubber, like an inner tube will not stand up to oil too well, so maybe heat-shrink tubing is best?

fwiw, the reason i keep putting up the complete data on my engine in my posts is to make it easily searchable by folks with older motors like mine, who want to read everything they can about them.

most of the old ones were wrapped with electrical tape. there are better resources these days, as heat shrink.

Electrical tape should hold up fine, and blend in with the rubber.

I saw a restored motor where the guy used corregated wire loom. Not original, but looked fine. Get it at any auto parts store.

My experience is that tape is temporary, till it gets gooey and gloppy.
