Just purchased a 1992 Four Winns Horizon 200 with a 5.0 liter OMC Cobra. I am brand new to boating and am having a problem with my outdrive. Previous owner had a new outdrive installed 2 years ago and it looked like it had never been put in the water. Recently the outdrive was banging when speeds reached over 25 mph with high RPM's. The clunking happened infrequently. My mechanic said that the gears in the outdrive were not aligned properly. He aligned and tightened the gears, which lowered the RPM's. However, the clunking still persists. The mechanic said that this will continue to deteriorate the gears and I will wind up replacing them in the next year or two. Is there anything else to look at? Boat and engine is in pristine condition and I'd hate to get rid of it! Also having problems with trim. Could this be something to look at or a different problem. Help!

Northbound, your description of "Your mechanic align'd, tighten'd the gears, which lowered the rpms, yet the clunking still persists" is confusing at the least!!! I'm am of the opinion that your mechanic knows not what he does!!!! Your problem is in the outdrive, correct?? It's either the upper gears/bearings or the lower gears/bearings!! If he addressed the upper gearcase, he should of gone further down south and/or visa versa!! Since you paid him to repair the problem and he didn't, .........
