Volvo Penta AQ125A / 270 outdrive. When shifting forward, sounds ok. When shifting in reverse, I get a loud "clunk". However it still goes into reverse gear and backs up. What makes the noise? Anything to worry about now or in the near future?

Re: Clunk when shifting into reverse

It's probably a combination of problems in the upper gear box. There is a brass spacer on the bottom of the vertical shaft that gets bent over the circlips in time, along with the shift mechanism ramps getting worn down on the forward side allowing it slip into gear easier.
The bent over brass spacer usually allows double or triple the allowed tolerance of .004 to .020 gap.
Getting it fixed requiers replacing the washer and reshimming the gear box. The shift mechanism, if the ramp is worn down, will have to be replaced.

its not a job that will break your wallet harris. it is a job that will extend the life of your gearbox and allow for a much closer inspection of all your critical transom components that arent serviced as much as they should be.
