Clutch Dog High or Low Speed

So I've been reading up on some of these posts but I had an issue the other evening and it got too late for me to put time into experimenting before nightfall. From what I gather, most dog issues are apparent at higher speeds not, idle to mid speeds (at least not with some forewarning).

The other day I'm just getting back on the water after a pit stop and going through a notoriously narrow channel at SNW speed and I heard bad noises coming from my motor, like I was on rocks or the dog issues I've read about. I stopped, regrouped and relaunched. Made it out and just as I was starting to throttle up it banged one more time so I backed off. I don't have tach, but I was no where near higher RPMs.

Unfortunately, I then had a secondary issue about 5 minutes later (which I'll be needing to address in another post) that my temp horn went off shortly after that so I immediately shut down and broke out the MinnKota and went home for the night. I wish I would have decided to try her out again after it cooled to see if the "bang" was going to be recurrent.

A bad shift dog will show up at high speed or upon acceleration.

It will sound a lot like shaking a hand full of rocks. It usually starts around 3500 RPM and can also be heard as one or two loud bangs on launch or shortly after. It's a weird one to trouble shoot for first timers because the noise telegraphs up and it sounds like its inside the motor.

But how likely would it be after running OK that it happened at 1000-1500 RPMs NOT upon acceleration (the initial occurrence)? That's why I was thinking it was perhaps not the gearcase? When it banged that second time is when it seemed more likely (causing a baaaad feeling in my gut).

To me the clutch dog jumping always sounded like the motor was hitting small objects under the water and the motor would jump a bit forward and backward a bit like it was hitting something
