clutch dog repair..

I have a 75hp 1983 sea horse slipping out of reverse gear, I adjusted the linkage thought i fixed it and now it slips..i think the clutch is worn in reverse..i want to know if it is possible to replace a clutch dog without dropping the lowere unit ..in the manual the only thing that could stop me that i see is the pin...i dont have to fix the forward gear...is this possible p.s 120psi on all 3cyl:confused:

Sorry, gearcase has to come off, pinion gear and drive shaft have to come out to get to remove propeller shaft and clutch dog. Then you can remove the pin to get the clutch dog to slide off the prop shaft. You will need to replace the clutch dog and inspect the engagement area of the reverse gear.

Damn!!!!...how hard are those pinion gear nuts to get loose...and is heat needed
to pull the carrier housing.....

You will need to remove 4 bolts from the prop shaft bearing housing, use a puller to remove the housing (usually no heat unless salt water). Get a special snap ring pliers to remove two animal snap rings, remove the reverse gear, us a 11/16 wrench on the pinion nut, a special spline socket on the top of the driveshaft............................. should take all of 5 min. :)

Im broke so do you think i can just do the one o ring cause im not removing the drive shaft or the shift rod compleatly....
