CMC trim and tilt help

I have an after market trim and tilt ( CMC) and the gauge is not working. I went thru the wiring and its all connected as it should be, and it cleaned the connections. I have 8 volts from the sending wire to the back of the gauge, and 12 for the accessory and a good ground. The sending unit on the trim and tilt gives 4-8 volts depending on where its positioned. Does this seem right or does it seem like the gauge is broken. If it is broken, can I use and aftermaket gauge, or the stock johnson/evinrude one?

i think you will get the best results, by going to the source, as there are more of us with cmc, than with. here's CMC's link:

hmm they don't seem to have that good of support so i'll see what they say in the email.

But, do all trim and tilt gauges have the sending wire, accessory, and ground on them? Or do they vary? I'm only wondering because i might be able to get a stock OMC one for free..
