Cobalt with Volvo 434...troubleshooting

Folks...first post here and certainly not a mechanic. Just know enough to make me dangerous...

I have a 1993 Cobalt with a Volvo 434. Had it just over a year now. Have did some minor repairs, mainly to the lower unit. (trim cylinders, bushings, etc.)

Motor had always ran great; no issues until I inadvertantly topped off the tank with super-unleaded fuel (with ethanol) a few weeks ago. Started missing that day, under heavy load. After that, we changed the fuel filter (which hadn't been changed for some time). Must've vapor locked then, and took some work to get it started, but ran great that day. I do recall 1 miss that day, but since that day, it has started missing more; mainly under heavy load or at higher rpm's. Seems to miss more when turning....which is strange. Idles very smooth and runs perfect at lower rpms. Seems like we are lacking some overall power too. It will get over 3500 RPM at a heavy load (near max load capacity). Speedometer doesn't work properly, but assuming we are running 40-45 mph plus with a large load.

All of my more mechanical buddies say (and I agree) that we just don't seem to be getting enough fuel. I was gonna add some Lucas Injector Cleaner, which I don't think would hurt. Imagine we should check plugs, etc. too.

Would any of the mechanical minds on here care to give me some thoughts as to what we might try?

Thanks sincerely for any opinions or suggestions.

Is this something the ethanol type fuel could be causing>?
