Re: Cobia or Maxum

I have a 1975 cobia. I love the lines and the boat. I dont have a base to compare it to maxum as I never had experience with maxum.

i have owned Cobia's and love them. you did not give enough info for a fair opinion, how are they powered, make, age and HP.

the cobia is a 17' runabout with a yamaha 130 2 stroke, the maxum is an open bow with a 90hp 2 stroke not sure which brand motor. I'm wondering about quality since the maxum is typically a bayliner. never have known anyone that has owned a cobia but know a few who have owned bayliners
and they kind of fall apart

Chances are REAL good that the 90 on the Maxum is a Force. In which case I would strongly prefer the Yammie powered Cobia. You are correct that Maxums are better appointed Bayliners.

I had a Cobia some time ago great boat and the 130 Yami is considered one of the best motors Yamaha ever built, I would definitely go that route if there are no big issues.

That's not entirely true and following the same logic a Sea Ray is a better appointed Bayliner. It's not a fair statement, to say the least.

I owned a '69 Cobia 19' and it was a very well contructed boat. I can't speak for their more recent vessels tho. I own a Maxum now and it's also a very well constructed boat. It's probably also unfair to say, but between my 1969 Cobia and the 2008 Maxum, I'd choose the Maxum. Since you want to tow a skiier, I'd go with the Cobia due to the larger engine.

Thanks for the help, it might be a 1994 but the pictures show a well cared for boat. i will take the 4 hour drive and look at it this weekend. Wish me LUCK!

i think you need to ask the seller, what the capacity plates says the max hp is on the cobia, 130 sounds high for the HP rating. there are consequences of owning an overpowered boat. if it is rated for the 130, go for it.

Re: Cobia or Maxum

My 1975 Cobia Tradewinds SS-170 is a Close Bow 17 Footer V-Hull with an 1975 Evinrude 70573-B 70HP (yes, that's my signature) and it does 30 mph (gps) wot. The plate in it has it rate for 115hp. However, I know Cobia went trhu some changes in 1991 so there might be some changes in the hulls that allows for a larger hp. Been looking for a 115hp myself, that thing should move wicked fast with 130hp.

Good luck.

talked to the owner again, it is a 7 passenger 130 hp max. It sounds good we will see.
