cobra outdrive leaking water

hey guys we just bought 1988 four winns with the omc 3.0 and cobra outdrive after redoing all the seats we took it the lake for a test drive and found that we have water leaking into the boat. at first we thought it was the plug but after running the pump i was to feel that it from about 2 inches above the plug. the pump is able to over come the leak so we went ahead and some fun but would like to get this fixed so we don't have to worry about. once we got we filled the boat with a garden hose to try and see where water would leak out of. it's coming from where the outdrive mounts to the transom should there be a gasket here? does the whole drive need to pulled off? or can i just run a bead of silicone around it and be good? any thoughts would be great

Your transom is rotted out.

Grab hold of the drive & push down on it while observing the transom. If u see any flex in the transom, it's rotted like Bruce said.

Not if its leaking between the transom mount and the hull as he described in his post.

ok i guess my post earlier didn't work i put all my weight on it and the transom didn't flex at all even bouncing on it there was no flex. any idea where i should look next? we plan to take it out this weekend with friends and really don't want to sink it.lol

Take some pics of the transom from inside the engine compartment and post em up.

here is the best pic we can get of it when we fill it with the hose water leaks out the back as soon as it hits the part above the plug i think it's called the transom plate? at this point i'm all ready thinking about going back to outboards

I really hate to say this... but I can almost see the rot through the fiberglass.

Get some 3M 5200. Get your drill out. Take a few core samples from that area. If the saw dust comes out the right color and dry, great! Just fill the holes with the 5200. If it comes out dark and moist...well then, you know what needs to happen next.
