I have a 91 OMC cobra, 5.0 liter and ever so often when I go from nutral to foreward, the boat will go foreward for a few seconds then "clunk" and keeps going. It is like the foreward gear was not fully engaged or something at the time. It doesn't always happen, but will usually do it while I am a relatively low rpm and will always do the clunk after coming from nutral and takes a few seconds of travel before doing the "clunk" Is this a shift linkage adjustment issue or worse? If it is a linkage adjustment, can you talk me through it, or is this a tricky thing left to pro's? :eek:What is all this talk of the lower units not being that great of a design, is there items to keep a close eye on, or save up for even with regular mantainance?

If it just does it comming out of neutral and only once chances are what your hearing is the clutch dogs did not quite engage then they finish dropping in loaded which causes the clunk or feels like you kit something with the drive. Cable adjustments took care of mine that acted like that, I couldn't begin to explain the proceedure, I had the book out and the drive off. Don't let it go too long and you'll still be ok with a cable adjustment.

Get a diagram from somewhere.Look for the BELL CRANK#42.Older Cobras were famous for leaking into the bell crank.Crap builds up and shifting gets more and more difficult. Take it apart remembering to clean and any measurements.LOTS of grease.J
